# Merging duplicate characters or locations

# Merging duplicate characters or locations

When the same character or location appears under different names (e.g. "JOHN" and "JOHN DOE", or "Coffee Shop" and "THE COFFEE SHOP"), you can **merge** them into one. All references in scenes, dialogue, and call sheets will point to the record you keep. The duplicate is removed.

## Where to find Merge

* **Characters:** **Breakdown** → **Elements** → **Cast Members** (or Characters). On the category page, use **Merge** for the character you want to combine.
* **Locations:** **Breakdown** → **Elements** → **Locations**. On the category page, use **Merge** for the location you want to combine.

Merge is only available for characters and locations, not for props or other breakdown items.

## Merging characters

1. Open **Breakdown** → **Elements** → **Cast Members**.
2. Find the two (or more) character entries that are the same person.
3. Use **Merge** and choose which character to keep. Typically you keep the one with the name you want (e.g. "JOHN DOE") and merge the other(s) into it.
4. Confirm. All scene and dialogue references, cast assignments on boards, and call sheet talent links will now point to the character you kept. The other character record is removed.

## Merging locations

1. Open **Breakdown** → **Elements** → **Locations**.
2. Find the duplicate location entries (e.g. "House" and "THE HOUSE").
3. Use **Merge** and choose which location to keep.
4. Confirm. All scene headings and breakdown references that used the merged location will now point to the one you kept. The other location record is removed.

## After merging

* Scenes, call sheets, and boards that referenced the merged record will now reference the one you kept. No need to re-assign scenes or talent.
* The merged-away record is deleted and cannot be undone. If you are unsure, keep the record that has more links (e.g. the character that appears in more scenes).

For more on working by category, see [Elements](/elements) and [Breakdown](/breakdown).
