Comments and Mentions

Who can do this: All plans. Anyone with access to the project can comment. Mentions reach organization members who can see the project; cast and crew contacts without a Spell Slate account cannot be mentioned yet.
You found the prop that matches the script, you put the photos and the seller link on the element’s board, and now you need the director to say yes before Friday. Comments keep that conversation on the thing itself, and a mention makes sure the right person actually sees it, in their inbox, on their phone, between setups. Comments live on every card on a board (scene, element, character, location, crew, shooting day boards) and on every task.

Comment on a card or task

  1. Click the comment icon on a card, or the Comments button on a task.
  2. Type your comment in the panel that slides in.
  3. Click Post.
Everyone already in the thread sees the new comment in the panel. On a task, the assignee, the creator, and earlier commenters also get an email. On a card, everyone who has commented on that card before gets a “replied on” email and an entry under Notifications, so the person who asked a question hears the answer without being tagged again.

Mention a teammate

  1. In the comment box, type @ and start typing their name.
  2. Pick the person from the list.
  3. Post the comment.
The list shows organization members who can see this project, each with their email underneath. Someone who is a contact but not a member does not appear; invite them from Team first. Pick the person from the list rather than typing part of the name: a mention only counts when it is the full name, the email, or the part of the email before the @. When two members share a name, picking one inserts their email handle instead, so only that person is notified.

What a mentioned person receives

  • An email with your name, the comment, and where it lives (the card and its board, or the task), with a View comment button that opens the exact card or task.
  • An entry under Notifications in Spell Slate, with a View card or View task link.
They get the email once per comment. If they were already going to receive the task’s comment email, they do not get a second one for the mention.

Reply from your inbox

You can answer a comment email without opening Spell Slate.
  1. Reply to the email as you normally would.
  2. Type your answer above the quoted text.
  3. Send.
Your reply is posted as a comment from you, on the same card or task, and the rest of the thread is notified. The quoted email and your signature are trimmed off. Attachments are not posted; the comment gets a note that they were left out, so add photos to the card in Spell Slate. Replies have to come from the email account Spell Slate wrote to. If you reply from another account, or you have since been removed from the project, you get a short email saying the comment was not posted and what to do instead.

Turn reply emails off

  1. Click your name in the top-right corner and choose Account Settings.
  2. Under Notifications, uncheck Email me when someone replies on a card I have commented on.
  3. Click Save changes.
Replies still appear under Notifications. Task comment emails are not affected.
